Chapter Twenty-Five

Back at the lodge, everyone dumped their wet coats, hats, and gloves in a pile near the door. Not wanting to leave the soppy mess for someone else to clean up, I rolled a coat rack over and started hanging everything.

“I’ll get that, miss,” Thomas said, hurrying over. He swiped up the rest of the pile from the floor, tucking the bundle under one arm before reaching for the coat rack. “I’ll ask Cassie to run everything through the dryer.”

“Thanks, Thomas,” I said. “But are you sure I can’t help?”

“I’m sure,” Thomas said, ducking his head and blushing. He hurried off across the room, turning into the back hall. Not once did he look up and make eye contact with anyone.

He is a strange fella, that’s for sure, I thought, moving to the table where Tech sat zoned out in front of three laptops. Everyone else had settled in chairs around him, but he seemed oblivious.

Along the table were several stacks of paper, and a humming printer, printing more pages, sat in a chair beside Tech.

Kelsey snapped her fingers in front of Tech’s face, getting his attention. When he looked up, she asked, “Anything I should know?”

“That depends,” Tech said, leaning to the side to reach a stack of papers. He passed them to Kelsey. “I borrowed Lana’s printer and printed out a few things while she was running errands in town. She might be ticked when she comes back.”

“Who cares,” Kelsey said, looking through the stack. “What’s all this? What did you find?”

I circled the table to stand behind Kelsey so I could look over her shoulder. Olivia moved to stand beside me, doing the same.

“What I found is a whole lot of missing person cases.” Tech leaned back and laced his fingers behind his head, looking smug.

Kelsey flipped through the pages. “I thought you already ran the search.”

“I did, but last night Olivia had an idea. See, I ran my first search based on people who lived in this area, but Olivia suggested I run a new search for people who’d recently visited.”

“How would you even run a search like that?” Ryan asked. “Missing person cases only list the victims’ home address and if known, the location where they disappeared.”

“Exactly, which is why we needed to take a different approach.” Tech pointed at Olivia. “Olivia borrowed a guest list from Lana’s computer.”

“Borrowed, huh?” I asked Olivia with a questioning look.

Olivia tried, and failed, to keep her smile hidden. “That’s why I didn’t notice you missing. I stayed up late waiting for Lana to go to bed, so I could sneak into her office to download the list. By the time I was done, it was late. Not wanting to wake you, I crossed the room in the dark and fell asleep.”

“Next time, give me a heads up,” Bridget said, cracking her knuckles. “Breaking and entering is my specialty. That, and picking locks, pockets, and such.”

Kelsey waved a hand at the piles of papers. “How did the lodge’s guest list turn into all this?”

Tech pointed to his laptop.
